Meet Madeline, Senior Communications Advisor in our Corporate Affairs team, who has answered the call to help in Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam:
"I’m a humanitarian at heart. Before joining Telstra I spent eight years working in the international aid and development sector and I’ve been privileged to have done a number of missions to places like Haiti, Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
"When I received a call from Australian Red Cross asking if I might be available to deploy to Vanuatu following Cyclone Pam, I put the question to my manager and the answer came back in less than two hours: yes. Within 24 hours I was on a flight to Vanuatu.
"Severe Cyclone Pam struck Vanuatu with ferocious force, leaving thousands of people homeless. In the two weeks I was in-country, Red Cross reached over 20,000 people across 14 islands with urgently needed supplies like tarpaulins, hygiene kits, kitchen sets and clean drinking water.
"While communities affected by Cyclone Pam are highly resilient, the task to rebuild and recover is enormous. There will be ongoing humanitarian support from organisations like Red Cross for some time to come and I’m proud to have been part of the international effort to support the people of Vanuatu, even just for a short time."
