How to shine in a video interview
Video interviews are increasingly common because they’re a great way for recruiters to get to know you better. That said, they can also be really daunting, especially if you’ve never had to do one before. When you apply for a role with us, you might be invited to respond to some questions by video response. So if you’re asked to prepare some answers and you’re not sure how to stand out, we’ve prepared the following tips to help you stand out in a video interview.
What Is It?
Basically, a video response interview lets you record your answers to set questions in your own time and in your own space. This is welcome news to people who hate being put on the spot with no real time to prepare. Record and rerecord as many times as you feel you need before sending through your responses in a reasonable amount of time.
We’ve mentioned previously that recruitment specialists can tell if a candidate is passionate about the role they’re applying for, which can really help them stand out from the crowd.
When we’re looking for new talent we want to get to know you really well, so we ask ourselves a few questions. Are you going to like working here? Do we feel like you’d be a good fit? That can be hard to convey in a cover letter and that’s why a video interview is a great way to make this clear.
How Can I Stand Out?
Our recruitment team’s standout advice is to treat your video responses just like a regular interview – so speak naturally and not just read off a script. Also, be sure to dress, look and act the part. Being snuggled up in your pyjamas may make you feel comfortable, but it’s not very business-like.
Location, Location, Location
Be creative! If you’re applying for a role in digital marketing, perhaps recording your responses with cool tech behind you might help. If you were applying for a role in finance, you might film yourself outside an exchange office - you’re only limited by your imagination but, of course, remember to keep it professional!
If you’re recording your response on a smartphone, make sure you mount it somewhere so that it doesn’t look like you’re vlogging – it’s still an interview, not a YouTube channel.
What Else Do I Need To Know?
The best thing about video response interviews is that you choose when you want to respond and in your own time. Remember, recruiters want to see you succeed; they want to see you do well because they’re spending a lot of time and effort to find the best candidate.
You’ve found the job of your dreams and you really think you can flourish; you just have to convince your recruiter. Being able to record your questions makes it easier than ever to show off your passion and enthusiasm for what you can do. With these insider tips you can make it happen!
