How flexible working helped make a bestseller
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial passion.
After establishing several successful (and some unsuccessful) start-ups, I realised they all had one thing in common. Whether it be the platform, product, or service, there was always a connection to technology.
Telstra’s focus on technology is what originally attracted me to apply to the Graduate Program, which I completed this year. Currently, I’m a Business Development Specialist assisting with the development of new businesses in the Home & Premium Services team.
It’s challenging and rewarding, but it still gives me time to work on my other big interests when I’m not in the office.
Outside of the office I run my most successful start-up, a digital publishing business that began after I wrote and self-published two books in 2014. They became Amazon best-sellers in the business and finance categories respectively. Within a month they were being sold worldwide in both ebook and physical paperback formats (in 2015 I released audiobook versions too).
Thanks to the success of my books, I noticed an opportunity in the nature of online book sales, which inspired me to launch my own digital publishing business.
To date, we have published more than 250 books (in various formats) and sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide, which isn’t bad for something I run in my spare time.
It’s been easy for me to work on my business while working at Telstra, thanks to the incredible flexibility and support for a good work-life balance.
My day job is my first priority, so I usually swap sitting in front of the TV watching MasterChef for working on my business. I tend to mostly work on my business in the evenings and on weekends (thankfully I’m also a night owl and love coffee).
My work and business have actually been complementary and helped me develop in both areas.
I enjoy what I do and am able to leverage things I’ve learned while working at Telstra in my own business, and vice versa.
Working on your passion projects or starting a business outside of full-time work is incredibly rewarding.
In a company that is open to flexibility in how and where you work, it’s a great way to stay productive, develop your professional skills and help you add value to your career and team.
