Telstra University Challenge: Meet the finalists
We’re down to our final three teams in the Telstra University Challenge, with the winner to be announced on August 1. Three teams spanning three universities in two states have come together with great ideas to clean up our communities or help us stay hydrated on the go. Meet our finalists:
Bin Monsters, VIC
Developed by a group of Monash University students, Bin Monsters would help tackle the challenge of national cleanliness set by Keep Australia Beautiful. The Bin Monsters team chose to focus on kids and their attitude towards littering. Bin Monsters is essentially a sensor-laden rubbish bin with a larger-than-life personality. The idea revolves around bins (the monsters) who like to be fed rubbish. They like it so much that they can remember who fed them and which school sports house they belong to. Before depositing the rubbish, tabs of colour on the lid representing their school house would be tapped by the child who is rewarded with points for their effort.
As plastic waste can lead to significant environmental damage, with plastic water bottles accounting for a large percentage of Australia’s total rubbish output, the team from Queensland University of Technology set about to quench thirst and reduce waste. While the disposable water bottle is convenient, its contribution to landfill is not. To tackle this, the QUT team created Refresh vending machines, which would dispense and recollect water bottles to keep people hydrated while keeping Australia cleaner.
RMIT University’s team developed a solution that would aim to drive an anti-littering culture through an incentivised rubbish disposal app called inBin. The solution would essentially help to encourage people to use public rubbish smart-bins, which would bestow rewards through a corresponding app. The app would allow users to redeem points for discounts at local businesses. The smart-bin would use a low-cost sensor to notify bin collectors when they were full.
We wish our finalists all the best heading into the end stages of the competition. You can tune in to this livestream from 3.15 pm on August 1, when the winner of the Telstra University Challenge will be announced.
