Director by day, mum by night – the ultimate balancing act
Two and a half years ago I was a General Manager working in Telstra Digital when I found out I was expecting our first child. I was personally delighted and somewhat in shock, I was worried it would mean putting my career aspirations on hold and pause plans for my next big role.
Two things happened that transformed the way I feel about Telstra. I was asked to apply for a role in another part of the business, even though it meant I would only be in the role for six weeks before starting maternity leave, and that they would need to start recruiting for my backfill as soon as I started. Really I thought; why would I bother applying given my circumstances? But I was the best candidate, was offered the role and promoted to a Director at seven months pregnant.
But the support didn’t end there. Returning to work from maternity leave, I received unwavering support from the company to work part time. My managers and peers made changes to their meeting rhythms to accommodate my working days. I learnt it was important to speak up when I couldn’t attend something on a non work day.
My son, Buddy, turns two this November and I continue to enjoy flexible work arrangements. For me this means I get to enjoy the moments with Buddy that mean a lot to us both. Today, I am just as ambitious (and like to think I am doing a pretty good job in my role) but don’t feel like I have to make a choice between my career and family.
I am immensely proud that I work for an organisation that supports us to be ourselves in the workplace and while being able to combine work with whatever it is that matters to us personally. To me it’s my little family, to others it may be a sporting aspiration and to some even managing illness. Whatever your story, you can feel supported to be you and have a great career!
