Telstra’s API Strategy states that APIs are critical Lego-like blocks required to unlock Telstra’s internal systems, foster, re-use and innovate (internally and externally):

“We want Telstra’s network and software assets to be accessible to developers and easily incorporated into their solutions. Successfully executed, the development of an API-based ecosystem is one of the most powerful moats that can be built around a business”.

Your role as the Developer Advocate will be:

  • The business, technical and industry subject matter expert around APIs and software development – you will be the trusted advisor of all things API related.
  • Drive Telstra’s API roadmap and strategy for internal and external developers (both public and partner).
  • Offer technical leadership through consultation with product managers. This will enable a self-servicing platform for Global Products to create their own successful API outcomes.
  • Define and manage the lifecycle of the API product portfolio, including cost, capital expense and service performance across all channels to market.
  • Build a successful developer ecosystem by managing social media, SEM/SEO and technical support tools like SDK’s, forums, blog posts, github repos.
  • Enhance developer communities that engages a greater awareness of Telstra’s developer services and capabilities.
  • Speak at industry events and evangelise Telstra’s API enabled products.

Therefore, to be successful in this role, you need to have the following:
 

  • Extensive software development background and proven expertise in Java, .NET, node.js, PHP and Python.
  • Experience in developing RESTful preferred or SOAP-based APIs.
  • Solid understanding of the Open Source community and some of the key tools related to CI/CD and Cloud technologies (e.g. OpenStack, Jenkins, Github, Puppet, Jira).
  • The ideal candidate will not only be a technical subject expert in API, but also commercially mindful to deliver products and services that meet business/revenue objectives.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Ability to easily and comfortably speak with sales, marketing, development, product management and senior leadership teams.
  • Currently engaged in/networking within the development community to build relationships and exposure of TDev.
  • Practical exposure to Lean-Startup, Agile, Design Thinking, SDLC, and other development methodologies.
