About the role

As a Senior Network Engineering Specialist, you will join the SolarWinds community - we are the engine room, monitoring the services Telstra provides to enterprise customers, working to be more automated with a lower cost on our digitization journey. We will rely on you to take us further on this journey.

The primary role of the specialist is to actively participate in a DevOps virtual team providing engineering design, development, change implementation and support of the SolarWinds application and associated platform infrastructure. You will flow to work to a small, collaborative DevOps team that focuses on delivering outcomes to a high standard that is led by a Technical Product Owner.

As a key contributor participate in developing system requirements and solutions. Translate complex domain and solution architectures into platform specific requirements and designs & define system interfaces and processes as well as deliver quality end-to-end systems that meet the user needs.

The Senior Specialist will have a strong focus on leading, delivering and executing on operational tasks of the team.   

Key accountabilities

  • Manage and support the SolarWinds application, platform and associated network infrastructure 
  • Build, deploy (using Ansible Tower) and maintain Linux based devices and virtual machines
  • Develop automated build, configuration and CI/CD deployment scripts.
  • Write automation code and tests, review code developed by others and provide constructive feedback
  • Proactively reviewing capacity across the SolarWinds platform
  • Proactively automating tasks which add value to business
  • Provide a Support function for the SolarWinds environment in line with Telstra’s DevOps principles including 24x7 support.
  • Ensure that the integrated components support the processes and the users and that the integration model is represented accurately to provide the required operational capability.
  • Develop lifecycle plans and enhancements for the solution to meet performance and operational requirements
  • Conduct functional testing, deployment of technology and resolution of complex escalated faults
  • Contribute to the delivery of key products/solutions aligned to customers' expectations (both performance and features) to support achievement of customer satisfaction targets 
  • Document designs and activities to support the transition of skills relating to deployment and release processes to operations staff to build internal capability 
  • Identify and promote best practice in Knowledge Management and Innovation. 

Your skills & experience

  • A Tertiary qualification in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or similar discipline.
  • Typically, a minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an Operational and/or Engineering role and have expertise with a variety of deployment, automation and configuration management tools.
  • Strong experience in deploying and operating a SolarWinds environment. SolarWinds certification is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of core Routing and Switching technology and critical Security principles and good practice. 
  • Strong system administration and platform/network integration skills. These include load balanced, virtualised and bare-metal server infrastructures
  • Proven scripting or programming experience that conforms to good software engineering design principles and practices (including version management)
  • Practical experience with automated server deployment, testing and management. Python, Ansible, Ansible Tower
  • Test management and automation
  • Practical experience with Continuous Integration and Delivery pipelines. Enhancing and improving CI/CD capabilities to reduce cycle time while retaining quality
  • Experience in delivering projects as part of an agile team. 
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and keen to drive innovation 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, problem solving and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal and consultative skills
