As recently announced, we are building a brand new start-up energy retailer inside our well-established business. To help us achieve this objective , we are offering an exciting opportunity for a Legal Counsel to join us and expand our legal team.
Telstra is one of the largest consumers of electricity in Australia, we underwrite renewables, we generate, we neutralise the emissions of our total operations, and soon we will be selling energy to consumers.

You make a significant impact to the business and Telstra’s most strategic projects, by helping to resolve complex issues, providing informed insights, and proposing innovative legal solutions that meet strategic objectives.
Leverage your deep experience and technical know-how to provide high quality, independent and strategic legal advice to Telstra’s energy team , helping to achieve good business outcomes while meeting legal and regulatory requirements
Support senior management with strategic projects, by identifying legal issues and risks that may have a significant impact on the business, providing expert legal guidance, applying critical thinking, sharing informed insights and implementing innovative solutions that achieve strategic objectives and resolve complex legal issues
Authentically engage, build and maintain trusted and collaborative working relationships with legal teams across Telstra’s business units, as well as internal and external stakeholders, by assisting them with legal matters, processes and standards
Take accountability for legal activities through inception to execution and ensuring careful management of budgets and external fees
Apply a continuous improvement mindset when providing legal support to clients, by sharing great ideas and contributing to initiatives which help drive productivity improvements and maximise client experience outcomes
Work closely with Regulatory, Compliance, Sustainability and External Relation colleagues to develop and execute an appropriate regulatory and government relations stakeholder strategy for Telstra’s involvement in the energy sector
Taking a leadership role to share knowledge and expertise of the energy industry in the broader legal team
To be successful in the role, you'll bring the following skills and experience :
Bachelor of Laws (or equivalent) and admitted to practice in Australia.
A minimum of four years’ experience PQE working in house at an energy supplier or energy retailer, or experience in private practice, specialising in energy law and energy market regulation (including the Energy Retail Code, the National Energy Retail Law and the National Energy Retail Rules).
Strong experience with electricity, gas and solar product design, advising on product implementation and product lifecycle management, in particular making sure the product meets the energy regulatory requirements and the business is compliant.
Understanding of the energy market, including legal risks, regulatory issues, use of energy data and the upcoming Consumer Data Right (CDR) to the energy sector.
Experience in leading multiple complex regulatory legal matters and managing legal spend.
Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with clients and external stakeholders (including regulators) and to deliver difficult messages whilst maintaining effective relationships
Ability to explain complex issues clearly and concisely, as well as balancing and prioritising workload.
