I shape how our business operates
My career in Telstra started back in 2014 when I was part of the Summer Vacation program. Someone in HR reached out to me via LinkedIn when I was looking at Summer programs during my penultimate uni year in Perth. There are only two universities in Australia that offer degrees in supply chain and my uni was one of them, which is why the recruiter got in touch about the role. So I applied, got the role and moved to Melbourne for the three months. I loved it so much that when I went back to finish my degree I was hanging out to join the graduate program.
I wanted to work for Telstra because it’s an amazing company with incredible size and scope in tech.
While other global tech companies just design cool products, they rely on the network Telstra provides to link them to the customer and supply chain plays a critical role in making that relationship happen.
At the moment, I’m in Operations Finance, which supports Information Technology Services (ITS) and Telstra Service Operations (TSO). Our team reviews and collects all the finance performance data, analysing it so the managers in the business can make informed decisions on what has been collected and what actuals have been incurred in the month. It’s mainly providing insights to the decision makers so they can make decisions and provide value back to the business. My role is to consolidate all of that and then it goes up to the Chief Information Office (CIO) and the Executive Director of Finance. Providing work and information to such a senior level of the business is an amazing opportunity.
While I’m glad that by rotating around business units as part of the grad program I get to experience other areas of the enterprise, I think it has helped me realise what I truly want to focus on in my career. I want to go back to supply chain where I did my Summer Vacation program now that I have a background in other areas. I want to leverage them into the area I’m most passionate about and can contribute valuably towards.
Telstra is one of the best places for a young professional because the only way is up. I like that it is possible to go from a Summer Vacation Program (three months) to a grad role (18 months) to a permanent role in the business. Better still, the program is structured to give you everything you need to be able to make a difference to the business and learn as much as you can.
