How the Telstra Graduate Program in Asia has helped to grow my career
The first time I heard about Telstra’s Graduate Program was on LinkedIn and I was intrigued by the opportunity to work across different areas of the business. After some additional research, I was drawn to the fact that it would give me the opportunity to have three different rotations in different teams and work on multiple projects before choosing my final career path and area of specialisation.
In University I studied mechanical engineering subjects and taken classes on quantum mechanics and accounting. I also studied telecommunications and its history out of sheer interest - who knew I would be working in this industry a year later!
As a mechanical engineer, I feel that Telstra is the right place to enhance my skills and challenge myself as the world is heading towards digitalisation and IT automation.
Being a graduate has given me the perfect opportunity to learn and grow in a company, which is growing across Asia’s bourgeoning markets.
My current role in Product Services allows me to bring optimum value to end users and intermediary departments of the business. My team works to enhance business productivity, whilst having a direct impact on product quality and customer satisfaction.
At Telstra, from the very first day, you’re considered an integral part of the team. You’re given real tasks and responsibilities, even leading a project. This allows me to challenge myself and become a more independent person.
As a Business Analyst, I have learned how to be more self-aware and confident. Working with numerous people on a daily basis and making presentations to senior leaders has increased my communication skills. My biggest support is my fellow graduates who are sharing the same journey as I am. I’ve certainly made a few positive changes that I am proud to see in myself.
The most exciting and unique aspect of the program is that we have the chance to meet and chat with leaders and gain insights from them on their personal journey and challenges on a regular basis. Recently we met our CEO, Andrew Penn and it was wonderful to chat with him and hear him talk about Telstra’s future in Asia and beyond. He highlighted one key takeaway from his career to us: ‘never stop learning’. Believe it or not, through the program in Telstra International, I have never run out of opportunities to learn new things and add skills to my portfolio.
