My future is built on brilliant people
I’m part of a team looking after high-end data banks and big business operations. I’m the team manager for Melbourne West Data Services and we fall under ‘Data and Complex’, which sounds interesting because it is!
Essentially, we look after data and high-end, complex work for big businesses just as it says on the tin.
I’ve got a team working in the Telstra Melbourne head office, completing our Future Ways of Working (FWOW) refit. Seeing it being made, I can see the benefits of FWOW – we’re here to do our best work and to do that you need a big network and an environment that helps you get things done quickly.
My team are fitting all the televisions, electronics, cabling, and interactive screens. All the electronics are done in-house by our team.
But that’s not all. I’ve got my team working on government contracts and field-work as well, helping big business tap into high speed data. We’re also involved in the NBN rollout, so we’re pretty busy.
I have a multi-skilled group of workers and they’re a brilliant group to work with. That’s one of the main things that keeps me at Telstra: the people.
I know it sounds cliché but when you work with talented people, it makes your work life so much better and rewarding.
I know it sounds cliché but when you work with talented people, it makes your work life so much better and rewarding. For me, particularly the last two years, the people have truly made my life pleasant.
But it’s not just me who’s focussed, everyone else I work with is focussed as well. The people, the community spirit of Telstra you get when you’re here is why I love my job.
In terms of advice, I’d say you always need to deliver. You can say you like the job and the work but if you don’t deliver on the promises you make, you’re going to fail. At the end of the day you can’t let the team down.
My current challenge is helping to cross-skill my team. Cross-skilling involves training and mentoring the current team I have for the next two years to get them to where they need to be for the future work and its challenges.
